IAPs are found in a wide variety of organisms from vertebrates to insects (Drosophila), and yeast to invertebrates (Caenorhabditis elegans). XIAP, cIAP-1, and cIAP-2 are thought to inhibit apoptosis through direct caspase inhibition. The anti-apoptotic range of action of IAPs is broad and overlaps with Bcl-2 family activity. All IAP proteins contain at least one 70 amino acid baculovirus IAP repeats (BIR) which is essential for their anti-cell death activity that is thought to work by protein-protein interaction via zinc binding domain. A common characteristic of the caspase-binding IAP proteins (XIAP, cIAP-1 and cIAP-2) is that they all exhibit three BIR domains in their sequence.
